Ridin' Dirty: Cops Stop George Zimmerman For Speeding, Find Gun In His Car (PHOTOS)

Posted 16 min 43 sec ago by Christina Coleman for Global Grind Staff

UPDATE: 3:35 PM EST
Here is the police report from George Zimmerman's run in with police on Sunday, via CBS reporter J.D. Miles:

-----
Look who's coming out of hiding again...and running into yet another encounter with the law.
George Zimmerman was stopped in Forney, Texas on Sunday for speeding, telling police that he was "headed nowhere in particular" when asked where he was going in such a hurry.
And according to TMZ, the former neighborhood watch volunteer who shot Trayvon Martin to death was already packing heat...just weeks after his highly publicized trial.
[Zimmerman] informed them he had a firearm in his glove compartment. Zimmerman was given a warning, after cops determined he was free of warrants. He was sent on his way with a polite goodbye, "Have a safe trip."
Given a warning? "Have a safe trip?" How does this guy get away with so much?

McDonald's McDouble: Cheapest, Most Nutritious Food in History? No Way.

The McDouble. Photo: McDonald'sThank heavens for the McDonald’s McDouble cheeseburger, “one of the unsung wonders of modern life.” Right?

Wrong!

More on Shine: McDonald's Alums' Big Bet on Healthy Food

Though the unhealthiness of fast food should be pretty much a given at this point, New York Post columnist Kyle Smith has giddily praised the McDouble not only as an unsung wonder but also as a wonderful way for people to eat cheaply and healthfully. In his nearly-800-word opinion, published Monday, Smith praised the McDouble’s $1 price and pitted “class snobs, locavore foodies and militant anti-corporate types” against “the poor.” He mysteriously called organics “the Abercrombie and Fitch jeans of food,” and even challenged the notion that fast food is linked to obesity.

More on Yahoo!: Vegetarians Live Longer and Prosper: Study

Smith’s column was inspired by a recent Freakonomics radio podcast titled “A Burger a Day,” in which host Kai Ryssdal based his show around a comment from a listener (Ralph Thomas) calling the McDouble “the cheapest, most nutritious and bountiful food that has ever existed in human history.”

Oh, Thomas and Smith, where to even begin to tear down your crazy claims?

Let’s start with the plainest of facts: nutritional content. One McDouble contains 19 grams of fat, 8 grams of saturated fat and 1 gram of trans fat, representing a whopping 29 percent, 42 percent, and 65 percent of your USDA daily allowance intakes, respectively, in just a single meal. The cholesterol content is at 22 percent of daily allowance—so if you’ve already had more than one egg for breakfast, you’re sunk, way before dinnertime. Fiber is at a woeful 2 grams, or 7 percent of the daily recommended intake (DRI). And the sandwich contains 850 mg of sodium, which is a pretty high 35 percent of the daily limit.

“It’s a pretty extreme claim,” Jim White, a registered dietician and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, told Yahoo! Shine about Smith’s column. “My main problem is it’s got 40 percent of the saturated fat for the day,” he explained, which can only add to the problem of lower-income populations having higher rates of disease. "I'm worried about heart disease. And I hate to hear a claim like this," he added, "because affordable foods can still be healthy."

So, taking cost in to account, what's the alternative?

As a guest on the Freakonomics broadcast, Mother Jones food columnist Tom Philpott wisely suggested that you “get a pound of brown rice, organic, and a pound of red lentils for about two bucks each. And a serving size, say a cup of each of those things, would be about 75 cents.” And check out the nutritional benefits: That serving size of red lentils contains 57 percent of DRI for fiber, 18 grams of protein (compared with 23 for the double burger), less than one gram of total fat, zero percent sodium and no cholesterol. The brown rice, meanwhile, adds 14 percent of daily fiber and 5 grams of protein, with a scant 1.8 total grams of fat and no sodium or cholesterol.

But Smith responded to that solution by snarkily dodging the issue. “Great idea,” he wrote. “Now go open a restaurant called McBoiled Lentils and see how many customers line up.”

He basically echoes an opinion shared on Freakonomics, in which guest Blake Hurst, a corn and soy farmer, declared, “I’m sorry, there is no amount of marketing that’s going to make me prefer brown rice and lentils over a McDonald’s cheeseburger.”

Are people like Smith truly concerned about feeding poor people nutritiously and cheaply? Or are they perpetuating corporate, agri-business myths that help to brainwash Americans into believing that healthy, plant-based whole foods are snobbish, while fat-drenched and antibiotic-laden meats and processed foods are cool?

While the cheeseburger may cost a mere buck, it brings with it less obvious costs related to healthcare. A constant stream of studies show that fast food contributes to heart disease and high blood pressure; a recent study found that vegetarians live longer than meat eaters due to having lower blood pressure. And while McDonalds has worked to lower the amount of antibiotics in its meats, it has not eliminated them entirely—something that concerns many

Neighbors describe different sides of Fla. gunman

HIALEAH, Fla. (AP) — The gunman who went on a shooting rampage at a South Florida apartment complex was described as a quiet man who took his mother to doctor appointments, yet also someone who was known for getting into fights and yelling at his mom.
The conflicting portrayals of Pedro Vargas, 42, emerged as police tried to piece together why he set ablaze the apartment he lived in with his mother and then killed six people before police fatally shot him.
As the eight-hour standoff unfolded, horrified residents hunkered down in their homes, at times so close to the action that they could feel the gunfire or hear negotiations between the gunman and police, authorities and witnesses said Saturday.
As the rampaged winded down, Vargas held two people hostage at gunpoint for up to three hours in their apartment until a SWAT team entered and killed him, police said. The hostages were not hurt.
"Nobody seems to know why he acted the way he acted," said Lt. Carl Zogby, a spokesman with the Hialeah Police Department.
Detectives were investigating whether Vargas had any ongoing disputes with the building manager, as some residents believed. His mother was not home at the time of the shootings.
"He was a good son," said Ester Lazcano, who lived on the same floor as Vargas and his mother. "He'd take her in the morning to run errands" and to doctor appointments.
Lazcano said she was in the shower when she heard the first shots, and then there were at least a dozen more. "I felt the shots," she said.
Miriam Valdes, 70, was in a friend's apartment two doors down. She said she heard officers trying to convince Vargas to surrender.
She said the gunman first asked for his girlfriend and then his mother but refused to cooperate.
Valdes said Vargas was also known as a difficult person who sometimes got into fights and yelled at his mother.
"He was a very abusive person," she said. "He didn't have any friends there."
Police were called to the aging, five-story apartment building in Hialeah, a working class suburb a few miles northwest of downtown Miami, on Friday at 6:30 p.m. The first calls reported a fire, but when firefighters arrived, they heard shots and notified police, Zogby said.
Vargas, who has no known criminal record, set a combustible liquid on fire in his fourth-floor apartment. Building manager Italo Pisciotti, 79, and his wife, Camira Pisciotti, 69, saw smoke and ran to the unit, Zogby said. When they arrived, Vargas opened the door and fired, killing both.
Vargas then went back into his burning apartment and fired 10 to 20 shots from a 9mm pistol into the street. One of the bullets struck 33-year-old Carlos Javier Gavilanes, who was parking his car after returning home from work. Zogby said his body was found next to his vehicle.
The gunman then kicked his way into a third-floor apartment, where he shot to death Patricio Simono, 54; his wife Merly Niebles, 51; and their 17-year-old daughter. Family members said Simono worked at a car wash and Niebles cleaned hotel rooms. Their daughter wanted to be a nurse.
Agustin Hernandez, Niebles' brother-in-law, loaded several old pictures and other items from his relative's apartment in a grocery cart and into his car. One showed his teenage niece smiling in a red graduation gown. Another pictured his sister-in-law posing in a white dress and pearls.
A binder also from the apartment had pop artist Justin Beiber's name on the spine, presumably belonging to the teenage girl, who family members identified as Priscilla Perez.
Marcela Chavarri, director of the American Christian School, said the Perez was about to enter her senior year.
"She was a lovely girl," Chavarri said through tears. "She was always happy and helping her classmates."
All six people were killed in a short time span, Zogby said, and it's possible they were all dead by the time police arrived.
Officers and Vargas then engaged in an hours-long shootout and chase, with police following the gunman from one floor to the next.
"He kept running from us as he fired at us and we fired at him," Zogby said.
Several hours into the ordeal, Vargas forced his way into a fifth-story unit and held two people captive. Sgt. Eddie Rodriguez said negotiators and a SWAT team tried talking with him from the other side of the door.
Rodriguez said the talks eventually "just fell apart." Officers stormed the building, fatally shooting the gunman in an exchange of gunfire. Zogby said Vargas still had several rounds of ammunition when he was killed.

Microsoft to let game makers self-publish on Xbox One

(Credit: Microsoft)Forget what you think you know about the Xbox One, because Microsoft seems intent on changing how the system works every other week.
After reversing its controversial policies for ‘always online’ internet connections and used games, the company is doing away with its unpopular publishing restrictions, opening the door for independent developers to create and release their own games on Xbox One without enlisting the aid of a publishing partner. That essentially turns every Xbox One owner -- from well known developers to your average Joe -- into a potential Xbox One game maker.
“Our vision is that every person can be a creator," Marc Whitten, corporate vice president at Xbox said in a statement. "That every Xbox One can be used for development. That every game and experience can take advantage of all of the features of Xbox One and Xbox LIVE. This means self-publishing. This means Kinect, the cloud, achievements. This means great discoverability on Xbox LIVE. We’ll have more details on the program and the timeline at Gamescom in August.”
That’s a huge change from the Xbox 360, which required independent developers to go through a licensed publishing partner like EA or Warner Bros. -- or Microsoft Game Studios itself -- in order to have their game released on the system’s popular Xbox Live Arcade. That resulted in expensive delays and marginalized profits for developers, who watched as publishers ate into their revenues, and has been viewed as a less friendly policy than what Sony has been doing with the PS3 and plans to do with the PS4.
While the change in direction is great news for Xbox One gamers, it won’t be immediate. Whitten told Polygon that the ability to use the retail Xbox One as a development kit won’t be available at launch.
Whitten also tried to allay concerns that self-published Xbox One games will wind up in a big, ugly holding pen, which is essentially what happened with the Xbox Live Indie Channel. Instead, imagine one big area that holds all kinds of games content.
“My goal is for it to just show up in the marketplace," he told Kotaku. “There will be everything from what are we curating, kind of like spotlight content, to the normal discoverability stuff like recommendations, what's trending, what's got a lot of engagement on the platform. And you'd be able to find that content in any of those. There wouldn't be any difference based on what type of game it was.”
Regardless of how it functions, the move brings the Xbox One even closer to feature parity with the PS4, though Sony has gone out of its way to promote indie developers. The company has secured the allegiance of big indie developers like SuperGiant Games (Transistor), Jonathan Blow (The Witness) and Lorne Lanning (Oddworld), who recently took Microsoft to task for its hostile approach to indie game makers.
Other indie developers are cautiously optimistic about Microsoft’s policy change, though many have been burned by the company in the past.
"If Microsoft doesn't promote your game, it will still be a gigantic uphill battle to see any sort of meaningful sales," Andy Schaz, creator of the award-winning indie game Monaco, told Shacknews.
Clearly Microsoft has a lot more explaining to do -- the devil is in the details -- but it’s hard to see this as anything but a good move. Now if they can just lower that price a bit…

***RUFF RYDER 4 REAL*** DMX ARRESTED.!!***

GREER, S.C. — Rapper DMX has been arrested in South Carolina and charged with driving under the influence.
Greenville County jail officials say the 42-year-old, whose real name is Earl Simmons, was arrested early Friday. He was also charged with not having a driver’s license.

Simmons was arrested last year in nearby Spartanburg County for suspicion of driving without a license. In that case, he was released after paying a fine.
Jail records show Simmons has been released. It wasn’t clear if he has an attorney.
Simmons was arrested in a Phoenix suburb in 2011 after a trooper clocked him driving at 102 mph. He had recently finished a stint in prison on probation revocation for failing to submit to drug testing and driving without a license.

Watch: Woman Attacks TV News Crew

A local news crew in Florida found itself under attack when a woman punched a photographer square in the face! The WESH crew is unsure why the woman came after them, but she initially chased down the reporter and then ended up socking the photographer.

Woman Sics Pit Bulls on TV News Crew

At the time, the crew was covering the shooting of a police officer, and therefore fellow police officers were close at hand. An officer was able to rush in, push the woman out of the way, and pepper spray her.

Paula Deen's Longtime Employee Says She Made Her Act Like A Straight Up Mammie (PHOTOS)

Posted 3 hours 7 min ago by Christina Coleman for Global Grind Staff

Paula Deen loves her some down south cooking ... and apparently some racist down south culture, too.
A former longtime employee of the butter queen has come forward to disclose even more about the lady who once wanted to plan a slave-themed wedding. Now, Dora Charles is claiming that the African American staffers were forced to wear Aunt Jemima-style outfits while working in the restaurant that made Deen a star, Lady and Sons.
Charles also says that the staffers were asked to ring a bell while hollering "come and get it!"
And to add insult to injury, they were paid $10 while working with Deen and forced to listen to her use racist language around them.
"It’s just time that everybody knows that Paula Deen don’t treat me the way they think she treat me," Charles said.
According to the Daily Mail:
Her relationship with Deen goes back 22 years during which time she helped her make a success of her now famous Lady & Sons restaurant in Savannah, GA.
Charles did everything from developing recipes to training a new generation of Deen-style chefs and became an integral part of her empire.
But when Deen asked her to ring that damn bell, Charles wasn't having it.
"I said, 'I’m not ringing no bell.' That’s a symbol to me of what we used to do back in the day."
When Charles refused, Deen asked another worker called Ineata Jones - who everyone apparently called Jellyroll - to do it. An image of Jones doing it was made into a postcard and sold in Deen’s stores.
"I’m not trying to portray that she is a bad person. I’m just trying to put my story out there that she didn’t treat me fairly and I was her soul sister."
Deen's spokesman spoke out about the allegations:
"Fundamentally Dora’s complaint is not about race but about money. It is about an employee that despite over 20 years of generosity feels that she still deserves yet even more financial support from Paula Deen."
Or the fact that Deen called the woman Aunt Jemima [and probably the n-word.] But hey, we're just saying.

Get Your Mind Out The Gutter! Reporter Accidentally Draws Giant Penis On Air (VIDEO)

Posted 9 hours 54 min ago by Ishaw Thorpe for Global Grind Staff

How's that for must-see TV?
Siobhan Riley, a local ABC reporter, was simply doing her job when she made a hilarious, yet innocent mistake. Riley drew a picture of a large penis when she was informing her TV viewers how their commute would be affected by road construction.
The hilarious part was that she didn't even seem to realize what she actually did, as she just continued to keep talking to the camera.
It appears to be an accident, but we're sure her bosses aren't too happy about it all.
Things could be worse. It could be Anthony Weiner's wiener on the television. Let's all be thankful.
